Fokker D.VIII monoplane pursuing an Se-5a
This is possibly one of the best attitudes for attack.  The D.VIII is fast enough to stay with the Se-5a, while it is also more maneuverable.  There is enough distance between them, allowing the D.VIII pilot to keep the British plane focused.  If he wishes, he can close in more as they maneuver, since aileron and rudder work bleeds off speed, making the Se-5 slow down.  It provides sufficient time to get in a solid burst.  Finally, the angle of the attack makes the SE-5's wings vulnerable.  If made from directly behind, it is extremely difficult to hit the wings, which are generally the more vulnerable areas of most aircraft.
